Latrobe Art Center teens and tweens class is back to explore their creativity and develop their art skills through a specialized art class led by regional professional artist Katelyn Buchan. Katelyn, a graduate of Seton Hill University and now a proud local artist, specializes in painting, expressionism, landscapes, dreamscapes, animals, and eye studies. With over 10 years of teaching experience, she is passionate about inspiring young artists and fostering their unique artistic voices. Starting in January 2026, Katelyn will be offering a series of engaging and educational art classes tailored specifically for tweens and teens. Each class will focus on a different art style, including surrealism, abstract experimentation, and more. Students will learn new painting techniques, explore different perspectives, and delve into art history—all while creating fun, small canvas paintings to take home at the end of each class.
1. Dive into Surrealism: Eyes of Imagination
Explore the dreamlike world of Surrealism in this hands-on class inspired by René Magritte. Students will dive into art history, studying Magritte’s iconic techniques and themes, then create their own 9x16 canvas painting featuring imaginative, eye-catching surrealist imagery—think floating eyeballs, whimsical landscapes, and unexpected juxtapositions. Learn how to blend imagination with technique to bring your subconscious visions to life on canvas.2. Abstract Expressionism: Texture, Color & Multimedia
Dive into the expressive world of Abstract Expressionism, where emotion meets technique. Students will experiment with bold textures, layering, and dynamic brushwork while exploring color theory, using a variety of mediums including watercolor, paint markers, pens, acrylic paint, and more. This class emphasizes creativity, intuition, and the freedom to express yourself on canvas in multiple ways.3. Inspired by Salvador Dalí: Surreal Landscapes
Take inspiration from one of Salvador Dalí’s most famous works, The Elephants, and learn how to transform an iconic painting into your own unique composition. Students will explore surreal landscapes, imaginative proportions, and unexpected details while developing their own dreamlike scenes that reflect personal vision and creativity.
4. Future Landscapes: Acrylic Painting Techniques
Discover the art of landscape painting by learning how to build depth, layers, and light in acrylics. Students will explore foreground, middle ground, and background while experimenting with color mixing, brushwork, and atmospheric effects to create a landscape that inspires them—a place they dream of visiting in the future.
